ccupations in the World of Avatar
Occupations are very diverse in the World of Avatar, especially in the Lands of Earth and Fire. Most occupations are related to the basic needs of the citizens. There are special places for training and preparation for learning to develop an occupation or profession, such as attending the Ba Sing Se University.
Air Nomads
In the Air Nomads’ Temples there are only a few possible occupations:

Airbending Instructor – Teaches Airbending.
Flying Bison Trainer – Caretaker of Flying Bisons before they are matched with a child-monk. - Member of the Council of Elders – Leaders of the Air Nomads that are also responsible for the government.
- Monk – Male dedicated to religious teachings.

Nun – Female dedicated to religious teachings.
Water Tribes
There are quite a few differences between the Southern and the Northern Water Tribes in the important occupations:
Southern Water Tribe
Mostly based in the defense and survival in the south pole:
- Cook – Prepares food for tribe members.
- Hunter – Kills animals for food.
- Tribal Chief – Leader of a Water Tribe settlement.
- Warrior – Protects and defends the tribe.
- Washer – Washes clothes.
- Canal Worker – Operates Canal to get in and out of city.
- Chief’s Adviser – Helps Tribal Chief to make decisions.
- Cook – Prepares food for tribe members.
- Fisherman – Hunts fish for food.
- Healer – Uses Waterbending skills for healing purposes.
- Healer Instructor – Teaches people the ability of healing.
- Hunter – Kills animals for food.
- Tribal Chief – Leader of a Water Tribe settlement.
- Tribal Princess – Daughter of the Tribal Chief.
- Warrior – Protects and defends the tribe.
- Waterbending Instructor – Teaches people Waterbending.
The Land of Earth
- Architect – Plans, designs, and participates in the construction of buildings.
- Artist – Creates, practices, and demonstrates different types of an art. It can be a painter, sculptor, dancer, actor, etc.
- Assistant – Helps another person accomplish his or her goals.
- Astrologer – Studies the positions of celestial bodies and related details. Can provide information about people.
- Attendant of the Omashu Mail System -’Manages earth boxes with the mail through the city of Omashu.
- Bartender-Barman – Serves beverages behind a bar or tavern.
- Bounty Hunter – Captures fugitives for a monetary reward.
- Cabbage Merchant – Sells cabbages.
- Canyon Guide – Guides people across the Great Divide.
- Cook – Prepares food for consumption.
- Earthbending Instructor – Teaches people Earthbending.
- Earth Rumble Competitor – Fights for public entertainment.
- Earth Rumble Host – Promotes and hosts the championship.
- Entrepreneur – Person who has possession of an enterprise, or venture, and assumes significant accountability for the inherent risks and the outcome.
- Farmer – Raises living organisms for food or raw materials.
- Fisherman – Gathers shellfish, or captures fish and other animals from a body of water.
- Fortuneteller – Predicts the future.
- Geographer – Studies geography, the Earth’s physical environment and human habitat.
- Government Official – Assists in the running of the Government.
- Graphic Designer – Person dedicated to the graphic design and graphic arts industry.
- Herbalist – Person dedicated to the economic or medicinal uses of plants.
- Historian – Studies and writes about history.
- Librarian – Person who is a specialist in library work.
- Mathematician – Studies quantity, structure, space, change, and related topics of pattern and form.
- Mechanist-Inventor-Engineer – Develops economical and safe solutions to practical problems using science and technology.
- Member of Terra Team – Protects Ba Sing Se.
- Member of the Council of Five – Directs the Military of Ba Sing Se.
- Merchant – Deals with trade and commodities in order to produce profit.
- Miner – Extracts minerals for the kingdom.
- Monorail Driver – Drives the Ba Sing Se Monorail using Earthbending.
- Monorail Ticket Checker – Stamps tickets for people boarding the Ba Sing Se Monorail.
- Musician – Plays or writes music.
- Nun – Female person dedicated to religion.
- Nurse – Attends and cures to sick people.
- Passport Attendant – Person responsible for validating passports for refugees.
- Pirate – Person dedicated to robbery or criminal violence committed at sea.
- Playwright – Writes plays; a dramatist.
- Prison Guard – Supervises prisoners in a prison or jail.
- Royal Earthbender Guard – Protects the Kinh.
- Royal Messenger – A messenger for the King.
- Royal Servant – A servant to the King.
- Scientific – Acquires some types of knowledge based on a scientific method.
- Student – Person who learns about a specific theme. Studies in a university or school.
- Tea Shop Owner – Owns and runs a tea shop.
- Teacher – Person who educates others.
- Thief – Person who steals, illegally, objects and another person’s property.
- Tour Guide – Guides and shows a city to tourists.
- Warden – Protects and directs a prison.
- Warrior – Protects and defends the Earth Kingdom.
- Zookeeper – Looks after the Ba Sing Se Zoo.
- Zoologist – Studies animals.
The Land of Fire
- Actor – Performs in plays.
- Admiral – Directs the naval forces of the Fire Nation.
- Architect – Plans and designs buildings. Participates of its construction.
- Captain – Serves under Commanders in the Navy or Army, controls and directs a ship and advises on strategy.
- Circus Acrobat – Involves difficult feats of balance, agility and motor coordination.
- Circus Trainer – Trains animals of a circus.
- Commander – Serves under Admirals, controls and directs several ships / a naval base etc.
- Cook – Prepares food for consumption.
- Farmer – Raises living organisms for food or raw materials.
- Ferryman – Maintains or attends a ferry.
- Firebending Instructor – Teaches people Firebending.
- Fire Sage – Religious authority of the White Lotus, serve the Avatar and keep the histories.
- Fisherman – Gathers shellfish, or captures fish and other animals from a body of water.
- Graphic Designer – Person dedicated to the graphic design and graphic arts industry.
- Great Sage – Leads the Fire Sages.
- Headmaster – Leads the School.
- Hitman – Person who is hired to assassinate.
- Innkeeper – Owns or manages an inn or hotel.
- Magician – Creates illusions of impossible or supernatural feats (magic tricks).
- Merchant – Deals with trade, dealing in commodities in order to produce profit.
- Mine-Worker – Extracts minerals for the kingdom.
- Music Teacher – Teaches music to students.
- Personal Assistant – Assists an important figure such as an Admiral.
- Political Adviser – Person who advises someone for political reasons. Advises the Royal Family.
- Prison Guard – Supervises prisoners in a prison or jail.
- River Cleaner – Someone who cleans rivers.
- Rough Rhino – Member of a special task group.
- Royal Guard – Protects the Emperor.
- Scammer -Someone who obtains money by fraud.
- Shopkeeper – Owns or manages a shop.
- Student – Person who learns about a specific theme. Studies in a university or school.
- Sword Instructor – Teaches people the handling of the sword.
- Tax Collector – Collects taxes from inhabitants in occupied territory.
- Teacher – Person who educates others.
- Warden – Protects and directs a prison.
- Warrior – Protects and defends the nation.
- War Minister – Oversees the creation or acquisition of any new military technology.
