araiya, the current Avatar and defender of the Lotus Alliance, enters the sanctuary of the Northern Air Temple on the night of the winter solstice, seeking to receive guidance from his past life; Avatar Zeng Ku. Avatar Jaraiya, coming before the massive doors leading to the sanctuary, uses his new Airbending abilities to blow wind into two massive horns, sending the air spiraling into mechanisms within the door and causing it to slowly open. Jaraiya, his dark red monk robes flowing, walks into the chamber filled with statues of all his past lives, each one being born in an alternating pattern of the bending lands from Air, Water, Earth, and Fire. Jaraiya being born a Firebender, the Avatar that came before Jaraiya was born a Earthbender. While every Avatar is the only individual able to master all the elements, the bender each is born as creates a distinct personality and cultural upbringing until they are told they are the new reincarnation of the Avatar at the age of sixteen.
Jaraiya walks among all the statues of his past lives, feeling a otherworldly connection to the aged faces around him. Moving through the room, he is drawn to a sudden halt as he finds himself standing before the rigid face of an Earthbending Avatar. Even though the young Avatar had never seen his past life before, he knew that his was his predecessor. Avatar Zeng Ku. Looking behind him, Jaraiya wonders how long until dusk, and if his companions would be able to handle the suspected attack on his life this night. He hated putting them in danger. Two of his friends were dead. If only General Reibesch had let him go on the rescue mission with them this would not have happened! No, it wasn’t the Generals fault… it was the damned empire. How could he stop them? He needed guidance. And he would need to talk to his friend Aumanil. Something changed in him after Talin killed the unconscious Nicci right in front of him. Aumanil seemed so depressed and distraught, but after dechiphering those runes he had a flare of decisive hope in his eyes, like he was planning something. Jaraiya trusted Aumanil, but he hoped the young Waterbender didn’t do anything too rash. Waiting until dusk when he could speak to his past life, Jaraiya crossed his legs in front of the statue and began to meditate on the recent events.
After a few minutes, the statue’s eyes suddenly begin to glow, and Jaraiya jumps up to find the room he was in gone, replaced by a bright misty mountain. Standing before him is the smiling face of Avatar Zeng Ku. The old Avatar greets Jaraiya, who retells the recent events of the war. Zeng Ku tells Jaraiya about the Empire before his death, and the beginning of their Theocratic tyranny. He also tells him that there is no doubt a foreign enemy at work here, pulling the strings behind the Empire. It is all somehow related to Brother Narev, who started the Fellowship of the Imperial Order. It is the duty of the Avatar to create peace in this world, and the only way to do that is to stop the Empire, and unite The Four Lands into four equal nations, in which The Avatar will maintain peace and prosperity. Zeng Ku, sensing danger outside, tells Jaraiya he will help him face the Empire this night. Jaraiya replies that he is ready, and his eyes glow white. Suddenly, all of the statues in the room eyes glow, as each of their past experiences and skills are focused through the body of Avatar Jaraiya.
The group outside the sanctuary, after just defeating the strike force, sees a whole regiment of firebenders arrive across the bridge. Just as the Imperial troops prepare to charge, the doors of the sanctuary open, fog billowing out. Standing in the doorway is Avatar Jaraiya, eyes glowing white as the memories and skills of all the past avatars flow through him. The Avatar State. After talking to Avatar Zeng Ku, it seems his previous life activated the Avatar State in Jaraiya. The most powerful ability that an Avatar can invoke is the Avatar State. This allows an Avatar to channel immense cosmic energies and knowledge of all previous Avatars, enabling them to perform epic bending feats. Avatars may unconsciously enter such a state in response to perception of mortal danger, utilizing the state as a defense mechanism, or emotional distress. During this state, an Avatar has access to bending techniques they themselves may have yet to learn but has no conscious control and likely causes great collateral damage. Avatars with mastery of the Avatar State have full conscious control over the state, and can enter and exit it at will. While in the Avatar State, the Avatar’s eyes glow, as do any body markings following Chi paths, such as Air Nomad tattoos, although if the body has received an injury deeper than the tattoo, then that spot will not glow in the state. It is not known if re-tattooing the area once the injury has healed would enable it to glow again. The glow is the combination of all the past lives, focusing their energy through the body. When one speeks in the Avatar State, their voice resembles a combination of several different voices at once, his and all the past Avatars, whose voices seem to reverberate.
Speaking in the terrifying voices of all the past Avatars, Jaraiya tells the group to leave now. The heroes are quick to comply. As they are leaving, the Avatar leaps onto the bridge which crumbles beneath him, the giant rocks floating all around him in response to his command. Water and Air swirl around him and as he thrust out his hands, a wave of monstrous flames leap forth, ready to obey their master. This is the last thing the fleeing party sees, followed by the screams of the Empire troops.
The group, rushing to the fort at the front of the temple, finds the temple heavily under siege from across the 50ft chasm where the ruins of the bridge remain. As they charge through the Lotus ranks, the soldiers cheer and rally at the arrival of their champions. As they pass, they find most of the alliance leaders incapacitated by the battle. High General Reibesch, the only commander left fighting, raises his sword in a rallying cry as the heroes approach, and quickly brief them on the situation. It seems the trebuchet fire has destroyed the whole front half of the temple, but the alliance was able to take out the trebuchet with a well aimed ballista shot. As they are talking to the general, a wild arrow catches the general in the chest, slamming him off his mount. Fow Bang Chow, bringing up a slab of stone to block the other arrows, grabs the general and rushes him back into the temple. The rest of the group charges into what is left of the fort, the top level bearing a dozen or so archers. The group rushes in just as 3 armored Saber Toothed Moose Lions covered in metal armor leap across the ruined bridge. After a long and ferocious battle the champions defeat the beasts, only to be faced with an unfathomable army. Just as the enemy began bringing huge metal bridges to cross the gap, Avatar Jaraiya lands before them. Lifting into the air, wind and fire swirling around him, the stones begin to shake and crumble as the ocean waters rise high into the air, creating a wall between the army and the temple. Sending out a wave of elemental fury, the empire troops are swept up and destroyed. Jaraiya, returning to normal and fallen unconscious, nearly falls to his death had Talin not caught him. After the battle, the generals brief them, and it seems the empire has issued a one year cease fire. The group is given command of The Jade Dragon to sail to the Northern Water Tribe and discover how to defeat the Wolfbat Spawn, as it seems peace is a fickle and short lived thing in this volatile world. Avatar Katsurik, the Avatar who defeated the wolfbats last time they struck the world, left his journal in his tomb deep in the Northern Water Tribe. In the meantime, the Avatar would continue his training in Airbending, and then move to the Southern Water Tribe to learn Waterbending. The one year cease fire would give them time to discover the secret of this ancient and terrible threat, and hopefully gain more allies before the Empire does. Their southern army may have been defeated, but it was but a small fraction of the monster that is the Imperial Army, and the monster would not be held at bay for long…
